What Savvy Consumers Look For: Licensed Journeyman Plumbers

All the info about what makes a licensed plumber!

All the info about what makes a licensed plumber!

In order to find the best value for their money, consumers must understand and look into claims that businesses make about their products and services. When it comes to looking for a residential or commercial plumber, companies will often advertise that they have a licensed journeyman plumber, but what does that mean? And what is the value to you, the customer?

What is a Journeyman Plumber?

To be a licensed (certified) journeyman plumber, a plumber must pass a written and practical exam to demonstrate knowledge of business and law as well as technical skills required for the job. The exam covers a range of topics, including:

  • Drainage waste and vents
  • Water supply systems
  • Backflow prevention
  • Storm Drainage systems
  • Plumbing fixtures, including  water heaters
  • General knowledge and regulations
  • Interceptors and traps
  • Isometric analysis
  • Hydronics
  • Septic and sewer

To qualify for the exam, a plumber must have a minimum of two years (4,000 hours) of on-the-job experience. To pass the exam, the plumber must get a minimum score of 75%.

Journeyman plumbers must re-certify every year. In order to maintain their license, plumbers must take at least 16 hours of continuing education every year.

Because there are specific requirements a plumber must meet in order to get and keep the journeyman credential, consumers are assured that a plumbing professional has the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the plumbing work in their home or business.

Who Needs a Journeyman Plumber License?

In the State of New Mexico, to provide plumbing repairs, an individual must have a journeyman plumber’s license or a company must have a contractor’s license, which means that at least one qualified plumber (a plumber with at least 4 years/8,000 hours of on-the-job experience) is employed by the company.

Beware Potentially Misleading Claims

Because of the way the regulations read, big plumbing companies may meet minimum licensing requirements by having one experienced plumber on staff. However, that does not necessarily mean that a licensed journeyman plumber will be doing the plumbing repairs at your Albuquerque home or business. In other words, less experienced and less skilled technicians working under a plumbing contractor may be doing the actual work, and that may result in lower quality repairs.

At Albuquerque Roto-Rooter, we have a full staff of licensed journeyman plumbers, so when you call for plumbing repair, a licensed plumbing professional will always show up on-site to take care of the problem. It is because of our licensed journeyman plumbers that we can so confidently stand behind our work with a one-year no-hassle warranty.

At Albuquerque Roto-Rooter, our licensed journeyman plumbers are available any time, night or day. We even have licensed plumbers on-call so that we can provide our customers with ONE HOUR emergency response service.

How to Get Full-Pressured April Showers

How to get your water pressure where it should be!

How to get your water pressure where it should be!

In the Albuquerque area, you don’t really expect rain showers until monsoon season, but you expect a full-pressured shower every morning in your home. If you’re getting dripped on more than getting a satisfying massaging soak, your showerhead may be clogged by mineral deposits. If that’s the case, you may be able to restore full water pressure without the help of a professional Albuquerque plumber.

Diagnosing the Loss of Water Pressure

Before taking on a DIY plumbing repair project, you need to make sure that the problem you’re equipped to handle on your own is really the problem.

You’re showerhead is likely losing pressure because of mineral build-up if:

You have noticed a gradual loss of water pressure. If your water pressure drops suddenly, there is more likely a leak or busted pipe to contend with, and that is better left to experienced Albuquerque plumbers.

You can see mineral build-up around the holes. Mineral build-up often looks like white and/or greenish crust that may flake off when you scratch it. If you have a brand new showerhead but not enough pressure, you may want to call your local plumbing experts at Roto-Rooter.

If you are unsure about the cause of your loss of water pressure, err on the side of caution—call Roto-Rooter to talk to a licensed plumber. We may be able to help you troubleshoot the issue over the phone, and you may still be able to complete your DIY repair, or we may dispatch a plumber to your home to check it out.

Cleaning a Clogged Showerhead

If you do have mineral build-up on your showerhead, it’s fairly easy to take care of it. Here’s how:

Remove the showerhead from the water pipe in the wall. To do this, you will need an adjustable wrench to loosen the collar nut. To protect the finish, put a thin cloth between the showerhead and the wrench.

Note: If your showerhead has a front component that screws off, you may remove it for easier cleaning. However, if you have one integrated unit, it is not advisable to further disassemble it.

Soak the showerhead in white vinegar for up to two hours to dissolve mineral deposits.

Use a brush to scrape loosened mineral deposits away from the holes. You may also run a thin wire through the holes to ensure that loosened buildup does not get brushed or stuck inside the showerhead unit.

Rinse the unit with warm water.

Reattach the showerhead.

While there are a number of products that may remove mineral buildup, we recommend vinegar because it gentler on pipes and ceramic and other tub/shower stall finishes than caustic chemicals.

Top 5 Plumbing Problems in Albuquerque, NM

Plumber hand with monkey wrench

Plumbing issues we deal with.

At Roto-Rooter, we get dozens of calls every day for residential and commercial plumbing repair. While we provide comprehensive plumbing services ranging from leak detection to sewer line replacement, there are some services that are required more frequently than others. The top five issues we see in Albuquerque homes and businesses are:

    Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure, when it affects both hot and cold taps, is likely a problem with the aerator. Cleaning out or replacing an aerator is an easy enough fix, even for people without training. In fact, Roto-Rooter technicians may even help you troubleshoot the problem to find out if it is the aerator to spare you the expense of a service call.

However, if removing calcium buildup in the aerator doesn’t restore water pressure, or water pressure only dropped in the hot or cold tap, it’s likely you have a leak somewhere. And for that, we’ll definitely be at your doorstep soon!

    Slow Draining Sinks and Tubs

Clogs, which may be caused by food debris, hair, soap and grease buildup or other organic material, can effectively shrink the diameter of your drain pipes. Clogs in the trap immediately below the sink may be removed by hand or with simple tools. Others, though, may be further down where only professional tools can get them. And if the drain is blocked because of a collapsed pipe, that’s definitely not the time to try DIY repairs.

Roto-Rooter has the professional tools and knowledge to locate the clog and thoroughly clean the pipe to restore the full diameter without damaging your plumbing system.

    Running Toilet

A running toilet isn’t necessarily a plumbing emergency, but it certainly can increase your water usage…and your bill. Sometimes, jiggling the handle actually works. However, there are a lot of parts within the toilet tank that may prevent the valve from shutting and the bowl from continually filling and stop the running. Our technicians understand the working parts and have replacement parts at the ready to save time and spare you the expense of replacing the entire unit whenever possible.

    Jammed Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are handy, but they really are not designed to dispose of everything. Fats, oils and fibrous foods (not to mention non-food scraps like metals or glass) can build up around the blades and prevent movement, which, in turn, can cause the motor to overheat.

If manually resetting the unit (by pressing the RESET button on the bottom or side) doesn’t restore function, it’s best to leave repairs to professionals. We firmly believe in being safe, not sorry when plumbing repairs involve components that have sharp blades.

    Burst Pipes

Burst pipes really may be less of issue in the summer, but in the winter months when temperatures fall below freezing for several days at a time, we see them a lot. Burst pipes are a plumbing emergency. They have the potential to cause serious property damage. So when we get these calls, we respond ASAP—in ONE HOUR (in most cases)!

Most common plumbing problems can be avoided with regular maintenance. Rather than wait until things really go wrong, call Roto-Rooter at the first sign of trouble. We will help you troubleshoot the problem as much as we can. If that doesn’t work, we’ll be at your home or business fast!

Call Roto-Rooter for plumbing assistance any time. We provide 24/7/365 emergency drain and plumbing service, and our regular rates apply beyond regular business hours.
